My Raw Dilemma

October 24, 2014 by Barbara Dolan 2 Comments

vegetables-2I am very focused on my health and am quite strict with myself when it comes to food choices.

I want to eat as much raw foods as I possibly can because I know that fresh, raw vegetables and fruit are full of important enzymes, vitamins and minerals that improve my overall health.  I know that these fresh raw foods rejuvenate my cells and clean my bloodstream. This helps me to maintain my weight, gives me more energy and helps me to feel more alive.Continue Reading

Your Biggest Source of Stress May Not Be What You Think

October 15, 2014 by Barbara Dolan Leave a Comment

IMG_0385AFor most people, stress is real in their lives.  People struggle with Physical stress, Emotional stress and more recently, Nutritional Stress.

What is Nutritional Stress?

Nutritional Stress is defined as stress in the body caused by eating foods with unhealthy properties.  It is caused by eating processed foods, eating too many sugary treats, eating refined foods, eating hydrogenated oils and more.

Our health is compromised by eating processed foods on a regular basis.  It is common these days for people to have many food sensitivities, as well as allergies. Studies have shown that there is a link between food sensitivies and allergies and the typical North American diet.  The food sensitivies and allergies can give way to ‘cravings’ and so the unhealthy foods are difficult to eliminate.Continue Reading

A Day of Gratitude

October 9, 2014 by Barbara Dolan 5 Comments

In Canada, we will celebrate Thanksgiving Day this coming Monday.  It is a time to give thanks for a good harvest and perhaps celebrate other good things that have happened this year.

Horn-of-Plenty

Previously I regarded this day as a day to get together with family and enjoy a nice meal.  Nothing more really.

Since my accident last year, I now take the idea of being thankful a bit more seriously.  I actually have a Gratitude Journal that has regular entries.  Writing down things that I am grateful for has been good therapy for me.  I had a few months there were I was quite confused as to my purpose on this planet and what was really the point of being here?Continue Reading

Pain in the Ass Parasites

October 2, 2014 by Barbara Dolan 10 Comments

Honestly, I know.  Parasites are nasty things that can make your life miserable.  But there is hope.  They can be destroyed.

It has become apparent that more people are infested with parasites and harmful micro-organisms than previously suspected.  In order to have true vitality and strong immunity it is important to understand the nature of parasites, the symptoms of parasitic infection, how parasites spread and to have a healing strategy.

I highly recommend that everyone does a parasite cleanse at least once per year, along with a yeast cleanse.Continue Reading

My Relationship with Candida

September 25, 2014 by Barbara Dolan 4 Comments

My relationship with Candida began in University, many years ago.  I felt tired all of the time, especially after eating.  I found myself craving breads, sweets and fruits and having very little self-control when I tried not to eat those foods.  Overall I felt foggy (I had difficulty concentrating), weak and sad; almost depressed.  I decided that I needed to do something about it.

I had the good fortune that my parents had been to see a medical doctor who was open to healing through diet and other natural means and so they suggested that I see him.

Upon meeting him, he was very frank with me.  He told me that from my symptoms and from a few other things that were visible to him (white spots on my fingernails, fungus on my toenails), that I had an overproduction of Candida.  I had never heard of this before.Continue Reading

Replenishing Your Gut Flora

September 17, 2014 by Barbara Dolan 9 Comments

gut healthAWhat are gut flora?

Gut flora are microorganisms that live in the digestive tracts of animals.  In the case of humans, we have about 100 trillion microorganisms in our intestines.  Wow.  I can hardly even imagine how many that really is.  Can you?

Why are gut flora important?

The gut flora in humans are there to help with the following important functions;

  • to regulate our bowel movements
  • to regulate our metabolism
  • to protect us from infection
  • to support the immune system
  • to help keep our hormones balanced
  • to make B Vitamins and Vitamin K
  • to break down carbohydrates to give us energy and nutrients
  • to protect us from inflammatory bowel disease or irritable bowel syndrome, type I diabetes and depression (who knew?!)

There are more functions that gut flora are involved in but this gives you an idea as to how important the flora are to our bodies.Continue Reading

How to Food Combine for Optimum Digestion

September 11, 2014 by Barbara Dolan 2 Comments

Briefly, optimum digestion occurs when our body is able to easily break down the food we eat, extract the nutrients we need to live with vitality and eliminate the wastes efficiently.

For optimum digestion there are 2 very important rules.

1.  Eat protein and starchy foods at separate meals.

  • Each combines best with green and non-starchy vegetables.
  • Best to eat only 1 protein or 1 starch per meal.

2.  Eat fruits alone.

  • Fruits digest faster than other foods.  If fruit is eaten with other foods, the fruit is held up in the stomach and then bacterial digestion starts to happen.  Fermentation starts to happen and you will experience gas, bloating, indigestion, etc.

Better-Digestion

Do you have great digestion?

If you do then presumably, nothing bothers your stomach (no bloating, no gas), you are not sensitive to foods, you have 2 or 3 bowel movements in a day without straining, your hair  is shiny, your skin is clear, your nails are strong, your energy is amazing and you are coasting along pretty happy.  That would be nice, wouldn’t it?

I have some suggestions to help get you there.Continue Reading

Fabulous Benefits of Flax

August 21, 2014 by Barbara Dolan Leave a Comment

Linum, Leingewächs, LeinsamenFlax is a plant native to the Mediterranean that has been used as a food item for over 5,000 years.

Flax was brought to North America with the early colonists and was first planted in the United States.  In the 17th century, it was planted in Canada, which is currently the major producer of flax seeds.

Flax seeds are shaped like sesame seeds but are a bit bigger.  The colours available are usually a dark brown but can also be this light amber colour that you see in the photo above.  The flavour of flax seeds is warm and earthy, with a nutty edge.  To make sure that you are able to get all of the benefits of the flax seed, eat it ground rather than whole.Continue Reading

Quick & Tasty Summer Salad Recipe

August 7, 2014 by Barbara Dolan Leave a Comment

IMG_0377AFor me, summer means an abundance of fresh cucumber and tomatoes right out of the garden.  Sometimes it is hard to stop myself from eating them before I have a chance to prepare a tasty salad.  This salad is easy to double or even triple, especially when the produce keeps coming.  Enjoy!

Remember to choose organic whenever possible.
